West, Sousa Compete at ITA Small College Championships

MOBILE, Ala. - Austin West and Devon Sousa represented UC San Diego at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships Thursday and Friday at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.

The duo earned the trip to Alabama after winning the doubles title at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships earlier this month.

On Friday, West and Sousa dropped a hard-fought, three-set consolation round match to Diego Gimenez and Juan Quiroz of Southern Indiana (7-5, 4-6, 10-6). In the 7th-place match, West and Sousa met up with the top-seeded tandem of Attila Toth and Nikolaj Wulff from Queens College and fell in straight sets by scores of 6-3 and 7-6 (4).

The Tritons were relegated to the consolation bracket Thursday after a quarterfinal loss against Armstrong Atlantic's Matus Mydia and Pedro Scocuglia. West and Sousa took the first set, 6-4, but lost the next two by scores of 6-3 and 10-6. Mydia and Scocuglia went on to place third overall.

The second-seeded team of Christian Hansen and Luis Loeffler from Valdosta State won the doubles crown by defeating Nebraska-Kearney's Josh Raymond and Yeswanth Nadella (6-4, 6-2).

It was West's second consecutive trip to the National Small College Championships. In 2010, he teamed with Erik Elliott and placed fifth.

UCSD is in action next at the SoCal Intercollegiates in Los Angeles Nov. 2-6.
