LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's soccer team tallied a goal in the 75th minute Sunday to cut Cal State Dominguez Hills' lead to one score but an equalizer never came to fruition, leaving the visiting Toros with a 2-1 victory.

"We came up against a really good Dominguez Hills team and we gave them a tough game," UCSD head coach Jon Pascale said. "But we need to be a little sharper and not make mistakes that lead to goals. We put a lot of pressure on their goalie, but we needed to get more than one goal."

CSUDH, ranked 19th nationally, recorded two first-half goals despite being outshot 7-5 through the first 45 minutes. UCSD rallied for its first score of 2010, when freshman defender Alec Arsht positioned himself near the far post and sent a header into the back of the net at 74:04 after receiving a cross from Kian Malek. The intensity of the action heightened with the match within reach for the Tritons, but the score remained 2-1 to the final whistle.

UCSD drops to 0-3-1 overall and 0-2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. CSUDH stands undefeated, at 3-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 through league action.

Less than two minutes into the match, the Tritons broke through for their first scoring chance. Gavin Lamming charged up the right side and sent the ball into the box, where Evan Walker charged in and sent a header just wide of the net.

The CSUDH attack picked up its pace later in the period, with Wyatt Stucker ripping a shot in the 27th minute from the top of the box and seeing it bounce off the bottom portion of the crossbar and to UCSD goalkeeper Jesse Brennan.

The Toros broke through five minutes later when Andre Turoldo dribbled into the right side of the box and sent a low shot inside the far post past a diving Brennan. The score marked Turoldo's third goal of 2010.

Just before halftime, at the 43:18 mark, CSUDH tallied its second score of the match. A cross from the right side by Miguel Vargas found Scott Locken, who sent a header off the right post and inside the net.

Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Tritons' offense continued to put pressure on Dickerson in the second half. Malek found Arsht with a cross in the 75th minute. Arsht, a defender from Oak Park, Calif., sent a header past Dickerson for his first career score.

Helped by its 6-2 corner kick advantage, UCSD earned regular chances to even the match. With 41 seconds remaining in regulation, senior Shane Micheil had the ball at his feet at the top of the box but sent a hard shot high over the net.

Dickerson ended the match with six saves, while Brennan totaled two. The two squads combined for 38 fouls and five yellow cards.

The Tritons, aiming for their first win of the 2010 campaign, will travel to play Humboldt State Friday before a road match with Sonoma State on Sunday.
