LAIE, Hawaii - The No. 30 UC San Diego men's tennis team suffered a 5-1 loss to BYU-Hawaii Thursday, eliminating the Tritons from the NCAA postseason. The UCSD team finishes the 2010 season with a record of 12-11, the same mark the team recorded in 2009.
"This team has always given a great effort and today was no different," UCSD head coach Eric Steidlmayer said. "Challenging BYU Hawaii again made it evident that our players lack tournament experience. The attitude that they've had this year and helping each other improve during the season, those are all positives."
BYUH secured victories in two of the three doubles matches during the first portion of Wednesday's contest, before taking the first three singles matches to notch the clinching fifth point. UCSD's lone point of the day came from an 8-5 doubles win at the No. 2 position, with Armaun Emami and Austin West defeating the Seasiders' Andy Xing and Agnel Peter.
The first round of NCAA competition marked the second trip to Hawaii this season for the Tritons. Earlier in the year, UCSD fell to BYUH and Hawaii Pacific before collecting an 8-1 win against Hawaii Hilo. The Tritons put together an impressive 8-3 record in the regular season against in-region Division II opponents and a key 5-4 home win against Sonoma State on March 12 kept UCSD at No. 3 in the region for the remainder of the year.
The Seasiders advance to the Round of 16, which will be held in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
