LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 15 UC San Diego women's tennis team suffered its first conference loss since 2003 on Wednesday, dropping a 6-3 heartbreaker to visiting No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona.
Within the California Collegiate Athletic Association, the Tritons' program had strung together 65-straight league victories. Ironically enough, CPP dealt UCSD its most recent loss in the CCAA on April 19, 2003.
"We're hoping that this is a motivation for us to work harder," Tritons' head coach Liz LaPlante said. "Cal Poly had nothing to lose and there was more pressure on us. They just played better. If we can defeat Cal State Stanislaus next weekend, this loss probably won't hurt us in terms of the playoff picture. Getting our regular lineup back intact is the first step."
UCSD falls to 10-5 overall and 6-1 in the CCAA. The Broncos improve to 12-5 overall and 5-3 in league action.
On Wednesday afternoon, CPP opened the match by taking two of the three doubles matches. Junior Anita Athavale and freshman Jacquelyn Davis combined for the lone Tritons' doubles win, knocking off Jennifer Chow and Jackie Trendt at the No. 1 position, 8-4.
After UCSD secured victories in two of the first three singles matches to finish, the match entered a deadlock at 3-3. The remaining three contests all went to three sets but the Broncos would prevail in each of them. The clinching point for CPP came when Chow knocked off the Tritons' Valerie Tang in the No. 3 spot of the ladder by a score of 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.
UCSD will look to get back on the winning track this Saturday when it hosts No. 38 Cal State L.A. at 11 a.m. The Golden Eagles are 7-7 this season with a 2-4 conference mark.
