LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 18th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team suffered an 11-3 loss to No. 13 San Diego State in the annual Harper Cup game on Friday night at Canyonview Pool. SDSU scored 10 of the first 11 goals to improve to a perfect 10-0 against the Tritons in the Harper Cup. The trophy is named after UCSD current head men's water polo coach
Denny Harper, who started both women's programs at both UCSD and SDSU.
Audra Bloom scored twice for UCSD as the Tritons drop to 16-18.
The Aztecs shutout the Tritons 3-0 in the first quarter and led 4-0 before Bloom sent in a goal at the 4:23 mark to pull UCSD within 4-1. SDSU closed the half with two more goals to lead 6-1 at halftime.
SDSU pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring UCSD 4-0. The Tritons outscored the Aztecs in the fourth quarter 2-1, as Bloom scored her second goal and Jessica Tran added a score.
UCSD is back in action next weekend at the Western Water Polo Association Championships in Bakersfield, Calif.
