STOCKTON, Calif. - The 14th-ranked UC San Diego men's volleyball team kept Pacific winless in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with a 31-29, 30-17, 33-35, 30-24 win on Saturday night at the A.G. Spanos Center in Stockton. The win was UCSD's fifth consecutive victory over the Tigers, a streak which started with 29 straight losses to the Tigers. UCSD was led by
Frank Fritsch with 19 kills while
Adrian Guthals and
Jason Spangler had 13 kills each. With the win, UCSD improves to 6-13, 3-11 MPSF while Pacific drops to 6-14, 0-14 MPSF.
Both Guthals and Spangler hit at a .550 clip while Cyrus Kiani had 12 kills on .647 hitting. Phil Bannan led the way with 58 assists as UCSD hit at a team .388 percentage. Spangler added 11 digs and Guthals added nine blocks.
Pacific was led by Florian Gornik with 23 kills on .452 hitting.
In the first set, the Tritons trailed 24-23 but quickly rebounded to take a one point lead. Pacific came back to lead 29-28, but Fritsch sent down a kill to pull even at 29-29. A UCSD triple block followed, along with another Fritch kill gave the Tritons a 31-29 win.
In the second set, the Trittons hit at a .545 clip, compared to just .130 for Pacific. UCSD had an 82 percent side out percentage as UCSD cruised to the 30-17 win.
UCSD was looking at a sweep but Pacific took a 7-1 lead. UCSD rallied to tie the set at 14-14 and would later take the lead. UCSD and Pacific traded sideouts late, until Pacific got a block and a service ace to close out the set at 35-33 Pacific.
In the fourth set, the Tritons led the Tigers 21-20. With Pacific trailing 25-23, Kiani had a block and a kill to put the set and match out of reach. After a Spangler kill, a Pacific service error ended the match in favor of UCSD at 30-24.
UCSD is back in action next week on March 12-13 when it travels to Romeoville, Illinois to take on Lewis in non-conference action.
