BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -The 20th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team defeated two higher ranked opponents in one-goal games on the first day of the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunner Invitational II. UCSD began the day with a 14-13 win over tournament host and 18th-ranked Cal State Bakersfield.
Hanalei Crowell scored her fourth goal of the game with 1:07 remaining which proved to be the game winner. Against No. 15 UC Davis,
Stephanie Heinrich and
Felicia Orozco connected on fourth quarter goals to give UCSD a 10-9 win over the Aggies. UCSD improves to 9-14, with seven wins in its last nine games.
In UCSD's 14-13 win over CSUB, Crowell and Audra Bloom scored four goals each, while Jessica Tran scored three times. Heinrich and Kirsten Bates also scored for the Tritons. Markayla Quane made four saves in goal.
UCSD led CSUB 6-5 after the first quarter and 9-6 at halftime. The game was tied at 11-11 heading into the fourth quarter as CSUB retook the lead at 12-11 with 4:33 remaining. With the score tied at 13-13 with 2:56 remaining, Crowell scored the winning goal with 1:07 left.
Against the Aggies, Bloom scored four goals while Stephanie Heinrich added three goals. Bates, Orozco and Crowell also scored for UCSD in the 10-9 win. Quane saved three shots each quarter to finish with 12 in the game.
UCSD is back in action for the second day of the CSUB Roadrunner Invitational on Sunday. UCSD takes on Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino.
