LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 20th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team gave 5th-ranked Hawaii all it could handle in a 10-8 overtime loss on Thursday night at Canyonview Pool. The Tritons trailed 4-1 at halftime but rallied to outscore the Rainbow Wahine 7-4 over the final two quarters to force overtime tied at 8-8. Hawaii would score one goal in each three-minute OT period to secure the win.
Audra Bloom led UCSD with three goals, while
Kirsten Bates added two scores. Monika Eggens led Hawaii with three goals. The loss drops UCSD to 7-14 while Hawaii improves to 11-6.
Hawaii's Monika Eggens scored all three of her goals in the first quarter as UH grabbed a 3-1 lead. UH scored the only goal of the second quarter and led 4-1 at halftime.
In the third quarter, UCSD's Bloom scored at the 3:10 mark and
Felicia Orozco scored with 2:18 remaining to pull UCSD within 4-3 through three periods.
In the fourth, the teams would combine for nine goals. Ryan Hanson Swaner put UH up 5-3 and Hawaii kept the lead until back-to-back Triton goals by Bloom and
Hanalei Crowell tied the game at 6-6 with 4:17 remaining. Saara Majuri and Carmen Eggens gave UH an 8-6 lead with 2:35 remaining. Bates would send in her second goal of the game to pull UCSD within 8-7 with 1:58 left. The Tritons retied the game on Bloom's third goal of the game at 8-8 with 1:01 remaining. After Hawaii came up empty, the Tritons had the ball last and called timeout with :25 to play. The Tritons came up empty as the teams went to OT.
In overtime, the teams would remain scoreless until Carmen Eggens put UH ahead at the 1:34 mark 9-8. In the second three-mintue OT, Amarens Genee scored with 2:07 remaining as Hawaii edged the upset-minded Tritons 10-8.
UCSD is back in action this weekend at the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunner II Invitational.
