LAIE, Hawaii - The No. 28 UC San Diego men's tennis team suffered a 7-2 loss Wednesday afternoon to No. 27 BYU-Hawaii, as the Seasiders secured victories in five of the six singles matches on their home court.
The Tritons, dropping to 9-7 overall on the season, will face an even tougher opponent Thursday in a 12 p.m. meeting with No. 5 Hawaii Pacific. BYUH, with the win over UCSD Wednesday, improves to 10-1 in 2010 and stretches its winning streak to nine matches.
In doubles action Wednesday, the Tritons' No. 2 doubles pair of Armaun Emami and Austin West captured a 9-8 win over the Seasiders' Agnel Peter and Andy Xing. After starting out the season 3-9, Emami and West have recorded three-straight victories.
At positions one through five in the singles ladder, BYUH posted wins by comfortable margins. The lone UCSD point in that stage of the match came at the No. 6 spot, where Tritons' freshman Junya Yoshida defeated Xing, 6-2, 6-4. With the victory, Yoshida's record during his first-year campaign improves to 9-2.
After Thursday's contest against HPU, UCSD will conclude its trip to the island with a Friday morning match versus No. 43 Hawaii Hilo.
