LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's water polo team defeated Pomona Pitzer by a 13-8 score and an 11th place finish at the 17-team Triton Invitational on Sunday evening at Canyonview Pool. Audra Bloom and
Stephanie Heinrich scored three goals apiece, while
Hanalei Crowell,
Felicia Orozco and
Kirsten Bates also scored multiple goals. Loyola Marymount defeated Hartwick 12-7 to claim the championship while defending champion San Diego State defeated UC Irvine 10-5 to claim third place.
The Tritons scored five times in the first quarter and led 7-5 at halftime. UCSD would then score five unanswered goals in the third quarter, taking a commanding 12-5 lead through three. The Tritons then cruised to the 13-8 win. Ebey Sorenson also scored in the game for the Tritons, her first goal on the La Jolla campus.
In other tournament action on Sunday, Cal State Northridge defeated UC Santa Barbara 8-3 for fifth place, while UC Davis defeated Cal State Bakersfield 14-3 to claim seventh place.
In the consolation bracket, Maryland defeated LBSU 11-7 for ninth place, UCSD claimed 11th place, Indiana took the 13th place game and Sonoma State defeated Redlands for 15th place.
UCSD is back in action on Friday, February 12 when it travels to take on Long Beach State in Long Beach. First sprint is set for 7:00 p.m.
