LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's water polo team went 1-1 on the final day of the UC Irvine Invitational on Sunday. UCSD put a stop to a six-game losing streak by defeating Long Beach State 10-9. The Tritons scored five times in the first period and scored three more goals in the decisive final quarter.
Kirsten Bates netted four goals while
Audra Bloom and
Jessica Tran scored two apiece. Earlier in the day, UCSD dropped a 9-5 decision to No. 13 San Diego State. UCSD is now 3-12 this season.
The third time was the charm for the Tritons against the 49ers as LBSU had defeated UCSD by scores of 9-7 and 9-6.
UCSD scored five times in the first period while holding the 49ers to two goals. In the second period, the teams each scored two goals to make the score 7-4 UCSD at halftime.
The Tritons started slow in the second half as LBSU outscored UCSD 2-0 in the quarter to pull within 7-6. The Tritons got back to scoring in the final period as the teams matched three goals apiece.
Also scoring for UCSD was Hanalei Crowell and Felicia Orozco.
Markayla Quane had nine saves in goal for UCSD.
The Tritons and Aztecs played to a 3-3 tie at halftime. SDSU shutout UCSD in the third quarter 2-0 to lead 5-3. The Aztecs would pull away in the fourth quarter scoring four goals for the 9-5 win.
In the loss, Bloom scored three goals while Stephanie Bocian and Tran also scored.
Quane added another nine saves in the game.
UCSD is back in action on Friday, March 5 when it hosts Western Water Polo Association opponent Santa Clara. First sprint is set for 6:00 p.m. at Canyonview Pool.
