LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's water polo team lost a 9-6 decision to Long Beach State on Friday night in Long Beach. UCSD and LBSU were knotted up at the end of the first quarter and halftime, but the 49ers outscored the Tritons 7-4 in the second half to pull away for the win.
Hanalei Crowell scored three goals for the Tritons and
Markayla Quane had three saves. Long Beach State was led by Krizia Cerda and Meaghan Leonard with three goals apiece. The Tritons drop to 2-7 on the season.
In addition to Crowell's goals, Stephanie Bocian, Audra Bloom and Stephanie Heinrich scored goals.
Bocian's goal in the first quarter tied the game at 1-1 and Crowell's first goal of the game tied the game at 2-2 at halftime.
After LBSU opened the scoring in the third quarter, Bloom tied it at 3-3 at the 5:09 mark. Down 4-3, Heinrich scored with 3:55 remaining to retie the game. LBSU scored the final goal of the period to lead 5-4 through three.
In the fourth, LBSU scored the first three goals to take a commanding 8-4 lead and never look back.
UCSD is back in action on Saturday when it takes on UC Irvine at 12:00 p.m. on the Anteater campus.
