Tritons Take Down Pomona-Pitzer on Senior Day

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Brian Donohoe scored five goals as the No. 12 UC San Diego men's water polo team took down No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer, 13-8, on Senior Day in Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) play Sunday afternoon at Canyonview Pool.

Triton seniors Bryce Madsen, Ryan Allred and Jakub Bednarek were honored for their years of service to UCSD water polo prior to the match. Allred and Madsen would score two goals while Bednarek added another goal in their senior sendoff.

The win moves UCSD to 12-11 overall. The loss drops Pomona-Pitzer to 14-14.

Two quick scores by the Sagehens put the Tritons in a hole to start the match, but goals from Allred and William Brown tied the match with 1:02 left in the opening quarter, 2-2.

UCSD grabbed its first lead of the match with 5:06 left to play in the second quarter, as Donohoe fired in his first goal of the game from the left flank. The teams would trade scores until halftime, matching each other at 6-6 going into the break.

Donohoe would score the first two goals of the second half, but the Sagehens answered, making it 8-7 in favor of the Tritons with 3:41 remaining in the third quarter. It would be as close as Pomona-Pitzer would come to tying he match the rest of the way.

Madsen, Allred, Kevin Driscoll and Dane Sequeira scored in succession for UCSD and Donohoe would score his fifth goal with 2:13 remaining as the Tritons cruised in the final stanza and take the match, 13-8.

Seniors Allred, Madsen, and Bednarek were honored with a standing ovation as they were subbed-out with 18 seconds remaining in the match.

"It has been an awesome four years," said Madsen. "To go out in great fashion in our last home game is really something cool."

David Morton registered 11 saves.

Up next for UCSD is the WWPA Championships Nov. 19-21 at Santa Clara University. The top-eight teams in the regular season conference standings will meet in a tournament to determine WWPA champion. Loyola Marymount has won the conference tournament the past three years.

UCSD is playing against two prestigious club teams from California next Saturday, November 13 in Canyonview Pool. The Tritons will face Sunset Sun Diego at 12:00 p.m. and San Francisco Athletic Club at 2:00 p.m.
