UCSD Wins Ninth Straight With Sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif. -The UC San Diego women's volleyball team picked up another victory on Friday, dispatching Cal State Dominguez Hills in straight sets in a California Collegiate Athletic Association matchup at the Torodome. Set scores were 25-13, 25-19 and 25-13 in favor of the Tritons.

UCSD has now won nine in a row overall, with its last loss coming on October 8 against league-leading Cal State San Bernardino. The Tritons' record stands at 16-7 on the season and 13-6 in CCAA play, while Cal State Dominguez Hills falls to 3-22 overall and 2-17 in conference action.

The Tritons swept the season series with the Toros, also defeating CSUDH 3-0 on October 2.

Roxanne Brunsting finished with nine kills, 15 assists and six digs for UCSD, while Katie Condon added three kills and 12 digs. Thalia McCann had a team-high 19 assists, while Janessa Werhane paced the Tritons with 15 digs.

Elizabeth Krieger finished with 10 kills and 14 digs to lead the Toros, while Denise Devine also tallied 10 kills.

The Tritons finished with an impressive hitting percentage of .313, swinging at above .300 for the third time in their last five matches. Defensively, UCSD limited Dominguez Hills to a meager .035, the lowest mark by a Triton opponent this season.

UCSD also held a decisive advantage at the net, out-blocking CSUDH 8-1.

With the opening set tied at six early on, the Tritons proceeded to score 12 of the next 15 points to take a commanding 18-9 advantage. The Toros committed six attack errors during the stretch, while Brunsting had a pair of kills. CSUDH closed to within 19-12, but Julia Freidenberg answered with a kill and the Toros' Cassidy Mangum was called for a bad set, making 21-12 in favor of the Tritons. After a Krieger kill, UCSD scored the final four points to close out the set, 25-13.

The Tritons hit .227 in the first stanza, while the Toros finished with a miserable -.148 clip.

UCSD outscored Dominguez 11-3 to open the second set, with Brunsting, Condon and Potter combining for five kills. The Toros would put together a 9-2 run to tie the score at 15, but the Tritons came back to grab a 21-17 advantage on a bad serve by Hilary Hougardy and an attack error by Krieger. The home squad closed the gap to three at 22-19, but UCSD answered again, scoring the next three points to close out the 25-19 set win.

The Tritons were in command from the outset of the third set, opening the frame on a 6-1 sprint. Back-to-back kills by Brunsting made it 13-5 UCSD, and a pair of kills by Cara Simonsen moments later gave the Tritons a 20-10 margin. A Potter kill and two straight errors by Krieger and Ashley Clark wrapped things up, as UCSD took the set and the match, 25-13.

The Tritons will look to make it 10 in a row when they take on Cal State L.A. on Saturday night at the Eagles' Nest. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
