ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The UC San Diego women's water polo team lost two games at the Michigan Invitational on Saturday in Ann Arbor. The Tritons fell behind 5-1 after the first quarter and dropped a 19-8 decision to No. 7 San Diego State.
Kirsten Bates had three goals while
Hanalei Crowell scored twice. No. 10 Michigan would hold off a late UCSD rally and defeated the Tritons by an 11-8 score.
Jessica Tran,
Stephanie Heinrich and
Audra Bloom scored two goals each.
In the loss to San Diego State, the Aztecs scored five goals in the first and led 5-1 after the first period. UCSD was outscored 4-3 in the second period as SDSU held a 9-4 halftime lead. SDSU scored five goals in both the third and fourth quarters while the Tritons scored one in the third and three in the fourth.
Against the Aztecs, Bates scored three times while Crowell added two scores. Felicia Orozco, Audrey Mitchell and Jessica Tran also scored goals. Markayla Quane had 12 saves for the Tritons.
Against Michigan, the Tritons got a first quarter tying goal from Tran at 1-1. Michigan took the lead to enter the second quarter with a score at 2-1. The scoring picked up in the second quarter as Tran's five-meter goal pulled UCSD within 5-3 at halftime.
In the second half, Michigan scored to push the lead to three before Stephanie Heinrich scored to pull UCSD back with 6-4. Michigan would tack on three more unanswered goals to take a 9-4 lead through three quarters. In the fourth, Michigan took a 10-4 lead before the Tritons finished the game strong with two scores from Bates and one from Audra Bloom.
UCSD is back in action on Sunday with two more tough match-ups against No. 6 San Jose State and No. 3 UCLA.
