Lumberjacks Too Much For UCSD In Second Half, Hand Tritons 74-60 Defeat

ARCATA, Calif. - Leading by just two at halftime, Humboldt State outscored UC San Diego 39-27 in the second half en route to a 74-60 victory on Thursday evening at Lumberjack Gym. Senior guard Jordan Lawley led all scorers with 30 points in a losing effort for the Tritons, reaching the 30-point mark for the second game in a row.

Humboldt State improves to 11-5 overall and 8-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with the win, while the Tritons fall to 4-9 overall and 3-7 in conference play. UCSD, which had won two of three entering Thursday's game, has just one win in seven road games this season.

Mike Kehrig scored 16 points off the bench to lead the Lumberjacks, hitting 6-of-7 shots from the field in 19 minutes. Zac Tiedeman finished with 13 points and six assists, while Kevin Atkins scored 12.

After matching a career-high with 31 points in UCSD's double overtime win over San Francisco State last week, Lawley scored 30 against the Lumberjacks, hitting 11-of-17 shots from the field in 35 minutes. The CCAA's leading scorer connected on both of his three-point attempts and went 6-for-7 at the line, while also hauling down eight rebounds.

While Lawley turned in another brilliant performance, he didn't have much help, as the rest of the team combined to score just 30 points on Thursday. Tyler Acevedo finished with nine points on 3-of-6 shooting and Christian Hatch finished with eight. No other Triton finished with more than five.

UCSD shot 50% (23-of-46) for the game, while Humboldt State finished at a 46% (25-54) clip, but the Lumberjacks were plus-nine at the free throw line and scored 24 points off 18 Triton turnovers. Humboldt also had a 26-8 advantage in bench scoring.

Leading 35-33 at the half, Humboldt State got consecutive three-pointers from Ellio Babcock-Krenk and Ernie Spada to build and eight point advantage. UCSD closed to within three on a layup by Casey Ryan, but the Lumberjacks responded with a 29-10 run over the next 10 minutes to take a commanding 70-48 lead with 5:37 left to play.

The home team went 9-for-9 at the free throw line during the stretch, while Tiedeman and Spada sank big threes to put the game out of reach.

Lawley drained his second three to bring the Tritons to within 72-57 with 2:12 left to play, but it was too little too late and the Lumberjacks held on for their third straight win.

The Tritons raced out to a 15-4 lead in the first half as Acevedo and Lawley combined for three triples in the game's first five minutes. The Lumberjacks came back to take a 26-22 lead on a layup by Kehrig and Tiedemen converted a three-point play just before the half to give Humboldt a two-point cushion at intermission.

UCSD is back in action on Saturday night against Sonoma State in Rohnert Park. The Tritons and Seawolves will square off at approximately 7:30 p.m.
