POMONA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's soccer team, despite finding the draw to be its most familiar result through the first four California Collegiate Athletic Association matches, secured a 1-0 road victory Friday over Cal Poly Pomona.
Junior Kasra Sarabakhsh, playing his first season as a Triton, scored the match's only goal on just his second career shot. Entering the contest off the bench, Sarabakhsh dribbled into the left side and shot the ball to the far end of the net past CPP senior goalkeeper Thomas Ryan after receiving a pass from junior midfielder David Bakal.
UCSD improves to 4-1-4 overall and 1-1-3 in conference play while the Broncos fall to 3-5 overall and 1-4 during CCAA action.
The Tritons' attack once again proved to be efficient, tallying the match's only score while getting outshot 20-11 over the 90 minutes of play. Most of CPP's shots landed wide or high of the frame though as UCSD senior goalkeeper Peter Akman needed four saves to earn his 17th career shutout Friday. Three of those four stops, however, came in the second half as the the intensity of the Broncos' offense increased.
Bakal, who has continued his stellar play as a starter on the midfield this season, recorded his third career assist and second of 2009 on the Sarabakhsh score.
The Tritons' next stop on the road trip is Cal State San Bernardino for a match with the Coyotes at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. CSUSB crushed Cal State East Bay Friday 7-0 to improve to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the CCAA.
