No. 20 UC San Diego Edged In Final Minutes Against No. 11 Loyola Marymount

LA JOLLA, Calif. ?The 20th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team nearly upset its Western Water Polo Association rivals, falling to No. 11 Loyola Marymount by an 11-9 score on Thursday night at Canyonview Pool. The Tritons jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter and led at halftime. UCSD's Stephanie Heinrich scored her fourth goal of the game, giving the Tritons a 9-8 edge with 6:22 remaining in the game. LMU would score the final three goals of the game to defeat UCSD. With the loss, the Tritons drop to 9-17 while the Lions improve to 21-7.

The Tritons controlled the game early as Heinrich poured in two goals, Sydney Gstettenbauer and Hanalei Crowell also scored as UCSD led 4-1 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, LMU scored three unanswered goals to pull even at 4-4 with 5:13 remaining in the half. Gstettenbauer scored at the 2:33 mark and Heinrich scored with 1:49 left to give UCSD a 6-4 edge. LMU tacked on a goal in its last possession before half to make the score 6-5 UCSD at the break.

In the third quarter, the teams would go back and forth until the Lions broke through with consecutive goals for the 8-7 lead. Audra Bloom scored her second goal of the period to tie the game at 8-8, entering the fourth quarter.

The teams would not score in the fourth until Heinrich scored with 6:22 remaining, giving UCSD the lead. LMU tied the game at 9-9 with 4:32 left and took the lead for good at the 3:06 mark.

UCSD is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Michigan at 12:00 p.m. The game is a Senior Day game as the Tritons will honor Gstettenbauer, Rebecca Gearty and Bridgette Bugay, making their final collegiate appearances at Canyonview Pool.
