SANTA CLARA, Calif. ?The 18th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team finished the Santa Clara Tournament with a 2-2 mark after defeating Colorado State 8-7 and losing to Santa Clara 10-7. In the win over the Rams, Nadine Shnayderman tied the game in the third quarter and gave the Tritons the lead for good with her second score of the game. Stephanie Heinrich also scored two goals in the win. The Tritons were within one goal of SCU after each of the first three periods, but the Broncos pulled out the win, outscoring UCSD 2-0 in the final period. UCSD is now 9-16 on the season.
In the 8-7 win over Colorado State, the Tritons and Rams were tied at 2-2 at halftime. The Tritons would fall behind 3-2, but Heinrich would score consecutive goals to give the Tritons the lead at 4-3 with 4:49 left in the third. Jessica Tran sent home a goal with 3:59 remaining and UCSD led 5-3. CSU tied the game with two unanswered scores with 3:01 remaining in the third. Nadine Shnayderman scored her second goal of the game at the 2:32 mark giving the Tritons the lead 6-5. Sydney Gstettenbauer and Kirsten Bates scored fourth quarter goals to seal the win.
In the loss to Santa Clara, the Tritons trailed 2-1 after the first quarter and 5-4 at halftime. The score stood at 8-7 SCU through three periods before the Broncos scored two unanswered goals to close out the win. Jessica Tran scored twice, while Kirsten Bates, Gstettenbauer, Rebecca Gearty, Heinrich and Hanalei Crowell added goals.
UCSD is back in action on Thursday when it hosts conference rival Loyola Marymount. First sprint is slated for 6:00 p.m. at Canyonview Pool.
