SANTA BARBARA, Calif. ? The 19th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team split its first two games at the UC Santa Barbara tournament on Saturday. The Tritons defeated Bucknell in the first game by a 10-7 score. Sydney Gstettenbauer led three Tritons with multiple goals. Gstettenbauer finished the game with four scores. In the second game, the Tritons dropped a 16-6 decision to No. 6 San Diego State. Freshman Kirsten Bates scored three goals in the loss to the Aztecs. UCSD will continue on day two at the UCSB tournament on Sunday with games at 11:45 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
The Tritons opened the day with a 10-7 win over Bucknell. With the score tied at 2-2 after the first quarter, UCSD scored three unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a 5-2 lead at halftime. Bucknell would not go away as the Bison outscored UCSD 4-2 in the third quarter to cut UCSD's lead down to 7-6 through three quarters. The Tritons closed the game well, scoring three goals to Bucknell's one to win the game 10-7.
Sydney Gstettenbauer scored four times while Jessica Tran and Audra Bloom also scored twice each. Stephanie Heinrich and Kirsten Bates also scored for UCSD. Markayla Quane made eight saves in goal.
In the loss to San Diego State, the Tritons trailed 5-2 after the first quarter and 9-3 at halftime. SDSU would cruise to the 16-6 win. For the Tritons, Bates scored three times while Rebecca Gearty scored twice. Janice Aguilar also scored.
