LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego women's tennis team continued their domination of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, defeating Cal Poly Pomona by an 8-1 score on Wednesday afternoon. UCSD is now 6-2 overall, 5-0 in the CCAA after winning five of six singles events and sweeping the doubles matches.
Natalie Varnay won 6-3, 6-3 at the top spot, while Anita Athavale posted a love-love win over Mallory Brady at No. 2. Varnay and Athavale teamed together for an 8-2 win at the No. 2 doubles position. Ina Dan and Taskeen Bains won at the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-6, while Tessa Tran and Valerie Tang won 8-2 at No. 3.
While Dan skipped singles play due to illness, Tang, Bains, and Tran were all individual winners. Tang won at No. 3 with sets of 6-2, 6-2 and Tran won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot. Bains dropped the first set, 4-6, before rebounding with a 7-6 victory in the second set and a comeback 12-10 super tiebreaker win in the final set from the No. 4 position.
Head coach Liz LaPlante's squad is back in action on Friday, hosting Sonoma State at 2 p.m. UCSD places twice more over the weekend, hosting Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday and Hawaii Hilo on Sunday. Both matches are slated for start time at 11 a.m.
