LA JOLLA, Calif. ?The 16th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team split two games at the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunner II tournament on Saturday. After losing a 12-6 decision to No. 19 Cal State Bakersfield, the Tritons rebounded in the second game to defeat Brown 9-7. With the score tied against the Bears at 6-6, Kirsten Bates poured in a goal with 1:00 left in the third to give UCSD the lead for good. Sydney Gstettenbauer had three goals in the win, while Audra Bloom and Jessica Tran also scored multiple goals. UCSD is now 7-14 on the year.
In the win against Brown, UCSD fell behind 2-0 and trailed 3-2 after the first quarter. UCSD scored two unanswered goals in the second quarter as Gstettenbauer and Tran scored to give UCSD the lead 4-3 at half.
With the score knotted at 6-6, Bates scored to give UCSD the 7-6 lead, heading into the final quarter.
Gstettenbauer and Hanalei Crowell netted goals to give the Tritons a three goal lead before winning 9-7.
In the morning game, UCSD and CSUB were tied at halftime 4-4. The Roadrunners outscored the Tritons 8-2 in the second half to close out the game. Stephanie Heinrich scored three times for UCSD while Gstettenbauer, Janice Aguilar and Tran scored.
UCSD is back in action next week at the Santa Clara Invitational, taking on San Jose State on Saturday at 10:40 a.m.
