LA JOLLA, Calif. ?The 16th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team held its own early on against No. 1 Stanford before falling to the Cardinal by an 11-5 score on Tuesday afternoon at Canyonview Pool. The Tritons scored the first two goals of the game and were tied with the Cardinal with 5:38 remaining in the second quarter. Tied at 3-3, Stanford would finish the game on an 8-2 run for the win. The loss drops the Tritons to 6-12, while the Cardinal improve to 17-1. UCSD was led by Sydney Gstettenbauer's two goals, while Rebecca Gearty, Hanalei Crowell and Stephanie Heinrich also scored. UCSD is back in action on Friday afternoon when it hosts No. 2 USC at 3:00 p.m.
The Tritons got off to a quick start as Heinrich and Gstettenbauer scored, giving UCSD a 2-0 lead with 5:33 remaining in the first quarter. Stanford got on the board at the 3:54 mark and would add two more scores in the period to lead 3-2 after the first.
In the second, Gstettenbauer scored with 5:38 remaining to retie the game at 3-3. Stanford would score three unanswered before halftime to take a 6-3 lead at the break.
Stanford outscored the Tritons 5-2 in the final two periods to close out the win.
