LA JOLLA, Calif. ?The 19th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team lost twice on Sunday and finished the 16-team Triton Invitational in 8th-place. UCSD began the day with a 9-4 loss to No. 15 Long Beach State. In the second game, the Tritons lost to No. 12 Cal State Northridge by an 8-3 margin. The losses drop the Tritons to 2-3 for the year. Sydney Gstettenbauer scored twice in two games on Sunday while Jessica Tran scored three goals, all against LBSU. UCSD is back in action on February 14 when it hosts Cal State San Bernardino at 11:00 a.m. at Canyonview Pool.
LBSU took control from the beginning against the Tritons, taking a 4-0 lead in the first quarter and a 6-1 lead at halftime. UCSD outscored LBSU 2-1 in the third period as Gstettenbauer and Tran both scored. Tran also added a fourth quarter goal in UCSD's 9-4 loss.
In the second game, the Tritons fell behind early again, trailing 4-1 at halftime. After Bridgette Bugay scored to pull UCSD within 5-3 with 6:51 remaining, CSUN closed the game out with three more unanswered goals.
