LA JOLLA, Calif. ?The 18th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team took a 6-4 lead into the fourth period but could not hold on against No. 16 Long Beach State as the 49ers outscored the Tritons 4-0 in the final quarter. Sydney Gstettenbauer and Jessica Tran scored two goals apiece for the Tritons while Hanalei Crowell and Rebecca Gearty scored one each. LBSU was led by Meaghan Leonard with two scores, including the go-ahead go in the fourth. With the loss, UCSD drops to 3-9 on the season.
With the score tied at 3-3 at halftime, UCSD's Crowell scored at the 6:26 mark to give UCSD the lead. After the game was tied at 4-4, Gstettenbauer (2:40) and Gearty (1:27) scored to give the Tritons a 6-4 edge, which would stand until the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, LBSU's Krizia Cerda scored at 7:29 to pull LBSU within one. Heather McKeon tied the game at the 5:20 mark at 6-6. The teams would remain tied until LBSU's Leonard poured in a goal at the 1:20 mark. LBSU would score one more time with :26 remaining to close out the scoring.
UCSD is back in action next week when it travels to the UC Santa Barbara tournament.
