LA JOLLA, Calif. ?The 18th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team had a strong first half but fell to No. 10 UC Irvine 14-8 on Friday night at Canyonview Pool. UCSD trailed 8-6 at halftime, but the Anteaters outscored the Tritons 6-2 in the second half to earn the win. Sydney Gstettenbauer scored a game-high five goals, while three other Tritons also scored. Ashling Taylor and Caitlin Haskell scored four goals apiece for the Anteaters. The loss drops the Tritons to 3-8. UCSD is back in action on Saturday against No. 16 Long Beach State. First sprint is set for 12:00 p.m. at Canyonview Pool.
The Tritons tied the score in the first quarter twice. Both tying goals were hit by Gstettenbauer. UCI took a 4-2 lead with :04 left on Taylor's goal. Jessica Tran then scored on a shot from mid-pool at the buzzer to make the score 4-3 UCI.
In the second quarter, Gstettenbauer's third goal tied the game at 4-4 for the final time. UCI would build a three goal lead before Stephanie Heinrich's goal before half made the score 8-6.
UCI outscored the Tritons 5-1 in the third quarter, while the teams exchanged goals in the fourth.
