IRVINE, Calif. ?The 16th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team lost twice on the final day of the UC Irvine Invitational on Sunday. The Tritons lost to No. 11 Michigan by a 7-3 margin. In its second game of the day, UCSD nearly defeated No. 13 Long Beach State, losing to the 49ers in sudden death overtime by a 9-8 score. In the loss to Long Beach State, Sydney Gstettenbauer scored three times while Rebecca Gearty scored twice. UCSD drops to 3-7 on the year. The Tritons return to the pool on Friday when they host UC Irvine. First sprint is set for 6:00 p.m. at Canyonview Pool.
In the loss to Michigan, the Tritons were in the game until the fourth quarter. UCSD and Michigan battled to a 1-1 tie at halftime as both teams held on the defensive end. Michigan and the Tritons each scored twice in the third quarter to bring the score to 3-3 through three periods. In the fourth, it was all Michigan as the they outscored the Tritons 4-0 in the final quarter.
Jessica Tran scored twice while Stephanie Bocian added a score. Markayla Quane made seven saves in goal.
In the 9-8 loss to LBSU, Gstettenbauer scored three times while Gearty scored twice. Bocian, Janice Aguilar and Tran also scored for the Tritons. UCSD held a one goal lead after the first, second and third quarters, leading 5-4 through three. LBSU then outscored the Tritons 2-1 in the fourth to force overtime.
In the first OT period, the Tritons scored and took a 7-6 lead as the teams changed sides. LBSU outscored UCSD 2-1 to force sudden death where LBSU scored the game clincher.
Quane made eight saves in goal for UCSD.
