IRIVNE, Calif. ?The 16th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team suffered two losses to two top-10 opponents on the first day of the UC Irvine Invitational. The Tritons began the day with a loss to No. 2 Stanford by a 16-6 score. Stephanie Heinrich scored five times against the Cardinal in the loss. Against No. 9 Loyola Marymount, the Tritons led after the first quarter but fell to their Western Water Polo Association rivals by a 14-8 margin. Sydney Gstettenbauer scored four times for UCSD in the loss. The Tritons are now 3-5 on the season.
In the 16-6 loss to Stanford, Stephanie Heinrich scored five goals while Janice Aguilar added a score. Markayla Quane recorded nine saves. The Tritons hung tough with the Cardinal, being outscored only 5-3 in the middle two quarters. Stanford outscored the Tritons 11-3 in the first and fourth quarters combined.
In the 14-8 loss to LMU, the Tritons led after the first quarter by a 4-3 score. LMU outscored the Tritons by a 6-1 margin in the second quarter, which proved to be the difference as the Lions took a 9-5 lead at halftime. Both teams would score twice in the third, while LMU outscored the Tritons 3-1 in the fourth. Gstettenbauer scored four goals while Rebecca Gearty, Audra Bloom, Stephanie Bocian and Jessica Tran added goals.
UCSD is back in action on Sunday for day two of the UCI Invitational. The Tritons will face the loser of No. 14 Cal State Northridge vs. No. 11 Michigan on Sunday at 11:45 a.m.
