LA JOLLA, Calif. ?The 2nd-ranked UC San Diego baseball team struggled to find its offense and lost both ends of a doubleheader to Western Oregon on Sunday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. WOU's Jason Moseby's eighth-inning two-run homerun proved to be the difference in the first game, giving the Wolves a 2-1 win, despite a great pitching performance by UCSD's Matt Rossman. The Tritons brought the potential tying run to the plate in its final at-bat in the second game, but could not come through with the timely hit and lost 6-2. The losses drop the Tritons to 3-3 while WOU improves to 4-4.
With one out in the UCSD second of the first game, Kellen Lee doubled to right center, driving in Chris Fung for the 1-0 UCSD lead.
The teams would remain scoreless until Moseby hit a two-run go-ahead homerun in the eighth inning to give the Wolves the 2-1 lead.
In the second game, the Wolves scored single runs in the first two innings on RBI's by Moseby and Cody Reeves for the 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, Joe Pratt hit a two-run homerun and WOU went ahead 4-0.
The Tritons got on the board in the third inning as Vance Albitz stole second and third base and scored on Tim Mort's RBI single to make it 4-1.
After WOU took a 6-1 lead, the Tritons had one last chance in the seventh inning. Chris Fung singled and advanced on an error. Nick Geach would ground out for an RBI and the Tritons were within 6-2. Vance Albitz walked, Matt Cantele singled and Tim Mort walked to load the bases. A ground out double play ended the threat and the Wolves had the game two win.
UCSD is back in action next week when it travels to Cal State Monterey for its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener. First pitch is on Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Seaside.
