LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 16th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team outscored Cal State San Bernardino 7-0 in the second and third quarters to defeat the Coyotes 14-6 on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Pool. “After the first quarter, we played well defensively and I like the fact that we were aggressive and made things happen offensively,” said head coach Larry Sanders. A trio of Tritons scored three goals as Sydney Gstettenbauer, Stephanie Heinrich and Jessica Tran all netted three goals apiece. UCSD improves to 3-3 on the season.
“We had the opportunity to run multiple groups out there and get a sense of what people are capable of,” said Sanders. “We also had the chance to tray a lot of different things on both ends.”
Kristen Bates added two scores for UCSD while Bridgette Bugay, Audra Bloom and Hanalei Crowell added goals. The win was UCSD's 13th win over Cal State San Bernardino in 13 tries.
UCSD is back in action next week when it travels to the UC Irvine Tournament on February 21-22.
The Tritons and Coyotes went back-and-forth early in the first quarter before UCSD goals by Audra Bloom (1:48), Bates (:51) and Tran (:18) put the Tritons ahead 6-3 after the first quarter.
