Seniors Lead The Way As No. 4 UCSD Sweeps HSU; Schmidt Breaks Single-Season Mark

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 4th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team won its last conference game of the season, sweeping Humboldt State 25-17, 25-19, 25-20 on Senior Night in RIMAC Arena. Sylvia Schmidt had a match-high 16 kills, bringing her season total to 447, a new UCSD single-season record. Triton seniors Elaine Chen, Lauren Bradley, Karen Reis and Schmidt combined for 38 of UCSD's 49 kills on the night. Reis had nine kills which was a career-high for the four-year letterwinner. With the win, UCSD improves to 28-2, 20-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while Humboldt State drops to 7-23, 3-19 CCAA.

The win was UCSD's 24th consecutive win in RIMAC Arena and the Tritons will await word on where and whom they will face in the NCAA West Regional. The announcement is set for Monday as the NCAA West Regional will be played on November 19-21.

Schmidt's total of 447 kills breaks the school record previously held by Bonnie Wilson who had 439 kills during the 2004 season.

Chen had 42 assists, giving her an even 1,200 on the season. Chen also finished with a double-double with 12 digs and had two of UCSD's eight aces.

Bradley finished with 12 kills and four blocks while Reis added nine kills, eight digs and two aces. Roxanne Brunsting had 13 digs and two aces.

Humboldt State was led by Oceana Matsubu with eight kills and Lesley Kalbrener had four kills.

UCSD outhit HSU .195 - .041, but the Lumberjacks outblocked UCSD 13.0 - 4.0.

In the first set, the Tritons scored eight of the first 11 points and never looked back. A Cara Simonsen service ace put the Tritons up 17-10 and UCSD would go on to lead by as many as nine points. Simonsen had the final kill at 25-17 UCSD.

The Tritons outhit HSU .257 - .000 in the second set. Leading 13-10, UCSD scored four of the next five points and took the 17-11 lead after an Audrey Green ace. HSU got no closer than 20-16 as Chen ended the set with an ace at 25-19.

The teams would tie four times in the early going in the third set, the final at 8-8. UCSD went on a 7-0 run on a Brunsting service run to open up a 15-8 lead. Leading 18-10, HSU chipped away with a series of blocks and pulled within 22-18. The Tritons called on seniors Bradley and Reis for their final kills as UCSD won 25-20.

UCSD is back in action at the NCAA West Regional on November 19-21.
