Schmidt's 19 Kills Lead No. 2 UC San Diego To Sweep Over Cal State Stanislaus In Turlock

TURLOCK, Calif. - Sylvia Schmidt of the 2nd-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team sent down 19 kills against no errors in a 25-16, 25-22, 25-21 sweep against Cal State Stanislaus on Friday night in Turlock. Schmidt's 19 kills on .500 hitting tied her second highest total of the season. Elaine Chen had a double-double with 35 assists and 15 digs, adding three blocks. Hillary Williamson had another strong outing with 11 kills on .346 hitting with nine digs. With the win, UCSD improves to 23-1, 15-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Warriors drop to 8-17, 2-15 CCAA.

The win marked UCSD's 24th all-time win in 26 matches against CSUS. UCSD has now won 58-of-69 all-time sets.

Schmidt's 2009 season-high was a school-record tying 31 kills in a five set match at Sonoma State. Schmidt has recorded 19 kills on three different occasions this year.

Chen's double-double was her sixth of the year and second consecutive after a 49 assist and 13 dig performance last week against Cal State L.A.

Katie Condon added nine kills on .304 hitting with nine digs. Roxanne Brunsting had nine digs in the first set, finishing the night with 17 total digs. The Tritons served up only three aces on the night, two by Brunsting. The three team aces by the Tritons tied a season-low.

In the first set, the Tritons scored 12 of the first 14 points, taking a 12-2 lead as Schmidt had four kills in the run. The Warriors never got closer than seven points the rest of the way. UCSD led by as many as 11 points after back-to-back blocks by Audrey Green, leading 23-12. Condon sent down the final kill in the 25-16 win. UCSD outhit CSUS .262 - .000 in the set.

Cal State Stanislaus opened up a 10-4 lead in the second set, forcing the Tritons to take an early timeout. UCSD got right back into the set with kills by Williamson and Condon and a Condon and Cara Simonsen block to pull within 10-8. UCSD trailed 14-10 before a four consecutive Schmidt kills tied the set at 14-14. UCSD took its first lead of the set at 17-16 after a CSUS error. With UCSD trailing 22-21, Chen sent down a tying kill at 22-22. The Tritons would shut out the Warriors the rest of the set as Schmidt sent down two more kills and the Tritons won 25-22. Schmidt had eight kills in the set while Williamson had five.

In the third set, CSUS scored seven of the first 10 points to take a 7-3 advantage. The Tritons regained the lead quickly, taking a 10-8 lead after consecutive Brunsting aces at 10-8. With UCSD leading 16-14, Schmidt sent down her 19th kill, followed by a Chen ace and Williamson kill and the Tritons opened up a 19-14 edge. CSUS would get no closer than three points the rest of the way as Condon sent down the match ending kill at 25-21.

UCSD is back in action on Saturday evening against No. 25 Chico State. First serve is set for 4:00 p.m. on the Wildcat campus.
