Women's Volleyball UCSD

No. 3 UCSD Defeats No. 17 Sonoma State In Five Sets; Schmidt Ties Single-Match Kills Record

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Sylvia Schmidt of the 3rd-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team tied a 22 year old school record with 31 kills in a thrilling 21-25, 28-30, 25-7, 25-22, 15-6 win over No. 17 Sonoma State on Saturday night in Rohnert Park. After losing the second set, the Tritons rallied and never let the Seawolves have another lead the rest of the match. With the win, UCSD improves to 18-1, 10-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Seawolves drop to 15-4, 7-4 CCAA. The match wraps up the first-half of conference play with the Tritons in second place, one game behind Cal State San Bernardino.

Schmidt's 31 kills tied the school record shared by former Triton Janet Hughes who had 31 kills in a single match on October 23, 1987. The last Triton to record 30 kills was Rebecca Bailey who accomplished the mark on November 15, 2007, a five-set win at the NCAA West Regional Quarterfinals against Northwest Nazarene. Schmidt's 31 kills came on a .293 attack percentage and eight digs.

Elaine Chen recorded a career-high with six kills from the setter position. Chen added 57 assists and 14 digs. Cara Simonsen and Hillary Williamson added a team-high five blocks apiece while Roxanne Brunsting recorded 20 digs.

Katie Condon added a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs while Williamson had a double-double of her own with 13 kills and 15 digs.

The Tritons fell behind early in the first set as the Seawolves took control with a 7-2 lead. UCSD climbed back within 9-8 after a Schmidt kill but SSU quickly answered the run. UCSD trailed 20-19, but the Seawolves ended the set on a 5-2 run to capture the first set 25-21.

In the second set, SSU took a 17-13 lead before the Tritons rallied to tie the set at 22-22 after consecutive Schmidt kills. The teams would continue to side out before Williamson served up an ace to give the Tritons a 27-26 lead and a serve for set point. It would be UCSD's only serve for set point as SSU responded with consecutive kills and would win the set 30-28 on a UCSD attack error.

The Tritons dominated the third set, taking a 15-3 lead on a Schmidt service run. Schmidt had three kills and an ace in the run as several Tritons contributed in the set. UCSD went on another service run as Williamson served up seven straight points as UCSD cruised to the 25-7 win.

The Seawolves best chance to make a run at the match came in the fourth set. Even though the Seawolves never led in the set, SSU was within 16-15 and 22-20. A Williamson kill and SSU error gave the Tritons set point. Williamson recorded a block to end the set in favor of the Tritons at 25-22, forcing the fifth set.

The fifth set mirrored the third set for the Tritons. Kaitlin Potter began the set serving for the Tritons. Potter helped the Tritons to a 4-0 lead before the Seawolves got on the board. After Chen sent down a kill for the 5-1 lead, Chen served up five straight points as the Tritons took a commanding 10-1 lead. The Tritons would cruised to the win as Williamson and Potter sent down the final kills at 15-6.

UCSD is back in action next week when it hosts Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, October 16. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
