LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 3rd-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team won its eighth straight match in a 25-19, 25-20, 25-23 sweep over Humboldt State on Friday night in Arcata.
Lauren Bradley hit at a career-high .643 attack percentage with nine kills and no errors.
Katie Condon recorded a match-high 11 kills while
Sylvia Schmidt added 10 kills. As a team, the Tritons served up 10 aces, led by
Cara Simonsen and
Roxanne Brunsting with three aces apiece. With the win, UCSD improves to 17-1, 9-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Lumberjacks drop to 6-12, 2-8 CCAA.
Simonsen also added six kills on .750 hitting with three blocks. Brunsting had a match-high 18 digs, her highest total since recording 26 digs against Cal State L.A. on September 18.
Bradley's errorless game was her fifth of the season. In her last six matches, Bradley has commited just four attack errors in 92 total attacks.
In the first set, the Tritons did not get their first lead until an 8-7 lead on a Julia Freidenberg kill. Tied at 12-12, Condon recorded a kill followed by a Simonsen solo block which began a 7-1 run and a 19-13 UCSD advantage. Humboldt State came within 20-17, but consecutive kills by Schmidt, Condon and Freidenberg put the set out of reach as the Tritons won 25-19.
The Tritons trailed 8-7 in the second set before going on a 12-2 run to take a 19-12 lead. HSU closed to within 20-18 forcing the Tritons to call timeout. Holding onto a 21-19 lead, an HSU error followed by a Brunsting ace put the Tritons on top 23-19. A big block by Simonsen and Bradley gave the Tritons set point before exchanged service errors closed out the set at 25-20 UCSD.
The third set was close throughout as a three-point Triton lead was the largest lead of the final set. Leading 18-15, HSU came back to tie the set at 20-20. The Lumberjacks too a 23-21 advantage, looking to force a fourth set. After a UCSD timeout, Bradley and Condon sent down kills to tie the set at 23-23. Brunsting followed with an ace and Condon capped the rally with her final kill of the night at 25-23 UCSD.
It was UCSD's 10th sweep of the season.
UC San Diego is back in action on Saturday night when it travels to Rohnert Park to take on Sonoma State at 7:00 p.m.
