No. 18 UC San Diego Sweeps Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside

SEASIDE, Calif.  ? The 18th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team improved to 9-0 all-time versus Cal State Monterey Bay with a convincing 25-17, 25-20, 25-16 sweep on Friday night.  With the win, the Tritons improve to 8-2, 2-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Otters drop to 3-9, 0-3 CCAA.  UCSD freshman setter Thalia McCann saw her first significant action with 39 assists, five digs and two blocks, while the Triton offense hit at a .317 percentage on the night.  Rebecca Bailey led the way with 14 kills on .387 hitting, while Hillary Williamson added 12 kills and Sylvia Schmidt with nine kills.

In addition to being undefeated in nine meetings with the Otters, UCSD has taken 27-of-28 sets against CSUMB.

The Tritons added six service aces and Roxanne Brunsting had 21 digs.

In the first set, the Tritons got off to a quick start, leading 5-0 on Michelle Torres' strong serving and extending the lead to 10-2 on a Williamson ace.  The Otters would pull within 19-15, but the Tritons would let the Otters get no closer as Schmidt sent down two kills to put the set in favor of the Tritons at 25-17.

It was the Otters jumping out to an early 7-3 lead in set two, forcing the Tritons to take an early timeout.  The Otters would then lead 16-9, needing only nine more points to close out the set.  With the Tritons trailing 18-16, Schmidt recorded a kill and followed with a six-point service run to give the Tritons the lead.  Once the Tritons got the 19-18 lead, there was no turning back as the Tritons closed the set on a 16-4 run after trailing 16-9.

In the third set, the Tritons led by as many as 10 points after scoring 10 of the first 15 points of the set.  A series which included three Schmidt kills and two by Bailey put UCSD up 20-10.  Williamson recorded the final kill and the Tritons had their sweep.

UCSD is back in action tomorrow night when it faces San Francisco State.  First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. on the SFSU campus.
