LOS ANGELES - The UC San Diego men's soccer team, despite landing more shots on goal than its opponent, was served its first loss of the 2008 season on the road Friday against Cal State Los Angeles in a battle of two unbeaten teams ending with a final score of 1-0.
The Tritons fall to 5-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Golden Eagles improve to 5-0-1 and 2-0-1 in league action.
The UCSD offense struggled to get rolling in the first half, recording just one shot when sophomore defender Daniel Pavitt (Temecula, Calif.) fired one on frame at the 15:40 mark. The Tritons failed to earn a corner kick in the first 45 minutes.
On defense, UCSD held CSULA scoreless though as well, despite the Golden Eagles launching five shots in the opening period. CSULA broke though in the 51st minute though junior midfielder Kristian Gaustad scored his second goal of the season off a header to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
The Tritons ramped up the pressure in CSULA's defensive zone in the second half, outshooting the Golden Eagles 5-4. The UCSD squad also had three corner kicks in the final 45 minutes.
Sophomore defender Jared Kukura (San Diego, Calif.), who ended the match with a team-high three shots, came up with the Tritons' best opportunity late in the contest. With CSULA goalkeeper Tobias Hummel out of the box, a shot from Kukura was saved by a Golden Eagles' defender just in front of the net.
The two teams combined for three cautions in the final seven minutes after going without cards up until that time. CSULA held on for 1-0 win and its gritty performance put an end to UCSD's undefeated record.
The Tritons return home to begin a four-match homestand starting with a contest against Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 26 at 4:30 p.m.
