LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 15th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team earned a California Collegiate Athletic Association win with a 25-15, 25-22, 25-11 sweep against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday night. The Tritons used several different lineups and hit .305 as a team, holding CSUDH to a .000 hitting percentage. Eight different Tritons recorded kills as Sylvia Schmidt led the way with nine, while Hillary Williamson added eight kills. The Tritons served up nine aces, six by Janessa Werhane. UCSD improves to 7-2, 1-1 CCAA, while the Toros drop to 1-9, 0-2 CCAA.
Also for the Tritons, Katie Condon added six kills on .357 hitting, while Rebecca Bailey recorded all five of her kills in the third set, the only set she played in. Roxanne Brunsting had 10 digs, while Kaitlin Potter recorded three blocks.
CSUDH was led by Ashley Davison and Madison Horsley with three kills apiece.
It was UCSD's 36th win in 37 all-time meetings against the Toros.
The Tritons got in their game early, jumping out to an 11-6 lead on Elaine Chen's ace. The lead quickly became 21-12 after a 10-6 run, capped by a Williamson kill. The Tritons would cruise to the set one win as CSUDH committed two attack errors at 25-15.
Much like set one, the Tritons took a 12-6 lead in set two. UCSD upped the lead to 17-10 after consecutive kills by Condon and Williamson. After a Toros timeout, CSUDH would go on an 8-0 run to take the lead, the final two points coming on UCSD errors. Trailing 18-17, the Tritons got kills from Lauren Bradley and Schmidt to retake the lead. UCSD would not give the lead up this time, pushing ahead 24-20 after a Werhane ace. Williamson scored the final kill at 25-22 to give UCSD the 2-0 lead in the match.
UCSD had its highest hitting percentage in set three, hitting at a .500 clip with 16 kills against just four errors. UCSD scored four straight points early on as Schmidt and Kimberly Carpenter alternated kills to give the Tritons an 8-3 edge. After CSUDH cut the lead down to 8-5, a Michelle Torres serving run helped UCSD to a 13-6 advantage. CSUDH would get no closer the rest of the way as the Tritons would cruise to the sweep. Williamson recorded the final kill, her eighth of the match at 25-11.
UCSD is back in action next week when it travels to northern California to take on Cal State Monterey Bay on September 19. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in Seaside.
