LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? The No. 15 UC San Diego women's water polo team went 1-1 during Friday's action at the Loyola Marymount Invitational.
The Tritons came close to knocking off No. 7 UC Davis Friday morning but eventually fell, 5-4. After a scoreless first quarter, UCSD got on the scoreboard with a goal by senior Judy Emaus at the 6:26 mark in the second period. The Aggies rallied back for three consecutive scores, including one with just 17 seconds left in the second quarter.
Another Emaus goal sandwiched between two other Triton scores gave UCSD its own 3-0 run and a 4-3 lead with 2:29 left in the third quarter. UCD connected on two goals in a span of just 21 seconds toward the end of the third quarter, taking a 5-4 advantage.
Both defenses held tough as the teams went scoreless in the final quarter. The Aggies improved to 11-6 while the Tritons dropped to 7-11.
Later in the day UCSD challenged Cal State Bakersfield, a team the Tritons beat at Canyonview Pool last Saturday by a score of 10-7. In the LMU Invite Friday, the Roadrunners could not overcome an early 3-1 Triton lead. UCSD received two first quarter scores from senior Nicole Hermann, jumpstarting the Triton offense to an impressive 11-goal team performance.
For UCSD, junior Sydney Gstettenbauer collected three scores while Stephanie Heinrich, Stephanie Bocian and Hermann added two apiece. Senior goalkeeper Kim Hockett made seven saves against CSUB and finished the day with 12 stops.
The Tritons finish up play in Los Angeles Saturday with a 10:50 a.m. match against Sonoma State and a 2:20 p.m. contest versus Santa Clara. UCSD returns home to play Colorado State on Friday, March 14 at 6 p.m.
