TEMPE, Ariz. - The UC San Diego women's water polo team, ranked 19th nationally, finished play at the Arizona State Invitational Sunday and ended up going 3-1 over the weekend.
On Sunday morning, the Tritons knocked off Pacific by a score of 10-5. UCSD jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first quarter and scored three more goals in each of the next two quarters, taking a commanding 9-4 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play. The Tigers and Tritons traded goals in the fourth quarter and the final score ended at 10-5.
Seven different UCSD players scored against UOP as junior Sydney Gstettenbauer and seniors Elizabeth Hahn and Nicole Hermann tossing in two apiece.
Sophomore Markayla Quane earned the start in goal for the Tritons before senior Kim Hockett replaced her for the second half. Quane made four saves and allowed three goals while Hockett had four stops and gave up two scores.
In the weekend's final match, UCSD challenged tournament host No. 7 ASU. The Sun Devils held a 4-0 advantage at the close of the second quarter but the Tritons refused to back down. Losing 8-2 in the final quarter, UCSD rallied for two consecutive scores late in the game from Triton freshman Hanalei Crowell. It was Crowell's 5th and 6th goals of the season. ASU prevailed in the end though, 8-4.
Gstettenbauer led her team with eight scores during the invitational's four games, raising her season total to 64.
UCSD currently holds a record of 14-14 overall. The Tritons will be back in action at Canyonview Pool on the UCSD campus April 5 to face Chapman at 10 a.m. and No. 6 San Diego State at 4 p.m. The contest with SDSU is part of the annual Harper Cup competition.
