SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? The No. 15 UC San Diego women's water polo team went 1-1 at the San Diego State Aztec Invitational Saturday, defeating Pacific by eight goals in morning action but suffering a tough 5-4 sudden death defeat to No. 20 Princeton during the afternoon.
Triton junior Sydney Gstettenbauer scored six goals against Pacific to lead UCSD to a 14-6 victory. After the Tritons held a 4-3 advantage at the end of the first quarter, UCSD outscored the Tigers 10-3 over the final 24 minutes of play. Redshirt freshman Janice Aguilar added a hat trick and five other Tritons tossed in goals. Senior goalkeeper Kim Hockett made four saves for UCSD.
The Tigers of Princeton, ranked 20th nationally, matched up with the Tritons for an afternoon contest. After the second quarter, Princeton led UCSD 3-2. The Tritons faced the same margin going into the final quarter as both teams were held scoreless in the third period. Gstettenbauer managed to put a ball in the back of the night with 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. It was Gstettenbauer's 56th goal of the 2008 season.
Princeton freshman Lauren Brunner scored the game-winner though in sudden death to give the Tigers a 5-4 victory. The Tritons now sit at 11-13 overall.
UCSD's next action will be as a participant in the Arizona State Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. on March 29 and 30. There the Tritons will take on Cal State San Bernardino, Cal Baptist, Pacific and No. 8 Arizona State.
