UCSD Picks Up Two Victories Saturday, Defeating Cal State Bakersfield and Pomona Pitzer

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The No. 16 UC San Diego women's water polo team picked up two victories Saturday, knocking off Cal State Bakersfield and Pomona Pitzer at Canyonview Pool, and improved to 7-10 overall.

The Tritons defeated CSUB, 7-5, Saturday morning as five different UCSD players scored. The victory over the Roadrunners was UCSD's 400th win since 1985, the time at which season records started being kept. As a program during that span, the Tritons have gone 401-253-4 for a winning percentage of .613.

Against CSUB, UCSD jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter and kept a manageable advantage through much of the game. The Roadrunners pulled back to within one score with 2:30 remaining in regulation but Triton sophomore Audra Bloom tossed in a goal at the 1:57 mark while CSUB was a player short to help give UCSD the 7-5 victory.

Around midday, the Roadrunners defeated Pomona Pitzer at Canyonview Pool by a score of 12-4.

Saturday afternoon featured a matchup between Pomona Pitzer and the Tritons to complete the mini-tournament on the UCSD campus. Senior Judy Emaus provided the offensive firepower for the Tritons, tossing in four goals against the Sagehens to raise her day's total to six scores. Emaus now has 20 goals in 2008.

UCSD held a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and never surrendered its advantage. The Sagehens narrowed the margin to just one goal midway through the third period but the Tritons went on another 3-0 scoring spurt to put the game away. UCSD ended up on top, 10-7.

The Tritons return to action March 7 and 8 as competitors at the Loyola Marymount Tournament held in Los Angeles, Calif. UCSD challenges No. 6 UC Davis at 10:50 a.m. on Friday, followed by contests against Cal State Bakersfield, Sonoma State and Santa Clara.
