Tritons Defeat Indiana, Then Drop Overtime Game to No. 12 Loyola Marymount

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The No. 15 UC San Diego women's water polo finished the first day of the Triton Invitational at a record of 1-1, after narrowly losing to No. 12 Loyola Marymount in overtime.

 

UCSD played its first game at 10 a.m. against Indiana University, entering the tournament at 1-3. The Tritons fell behind 1-0 early in the first quarter but went on a 3-0 run behind scores from senior Nicole Hermann, senior Elizabeth Hahn and junior Sydney Gstettenbauer.

 

Indiana and UCSD traded scores for most of the final three quarters and impressively, the Tritons maintained a lead from 5:27 remaining in the first quarter to the end of regulation. UCSD's defense held the Hoosiers scoreless for almost the entire fourth quarter.

 

Gstettenbauer led her team with four goals while Hermann added two scores.

 

The victory matched the Tritons up with No. 12 Loyola Marymount for an afternoon match after the Lions knocked off Cal Baptist, 12-3.

 

UCSD faced a 2-0 deficit at the hands of LMU midway through the first quarter. Triton sophomore Stephanie Heinrich tossed in two goals though, cutting LMU's advantage to 3-2.

 

During the next three quarters LMU's lead did not extend beyond two goals and UCSD at three different points. The two teams were deadlocked at eight goals apiece for seven out of the eight minutes in the fourth quarter and at the end of regulation the contest moved to overtime.

 

After the Lions scored a goal midway through the first overtime period, the Tritons rallied back for a goal of their own to make the score 9-9 after three minutes. The two teams traded goals again early in the next period to knot the game at 10-10. With nine seconds remaining though in the second overtime period, LMU senior Sheena Carter threw in the game-winning goal.

 

Heinrich led the Tritons with four goals while Hermann and Gstettenbauer added three apiece.

 

UCSD will challenge No. 14 Long Beach State at 9:15 a.m. Sunday as tournament action continues.
