LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's tennis team successfully began the defense of its CCAA Championship with a convincing 8-1 victory over visiting Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon at the Northview Tennis Courts on the UCSD campus. With the win the Tritons improve to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play while dropping the Coyotes to 2-1 on the year and 0-1 in conference action.
The win also preserves UCSD's win streak in league play, extending that record run to 41-straight. The last Triton loss to a CCAA squad came back on April 19, 2003, a defeat coming aganist Cal Poly Pomona. Since then, UCSD has won four-straight CCAA titles (2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007), posting 10-0 marks each time.
Head coach Liz LaPlante's squad got off to a great start, winning all three doubles matches by an 8-1 margin to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. The Tritons would win five of the six singles matches in straight sets, two of which came by 6-0, 6-0 scores. CSUSB's only point came at the top spot on the singles ladder where Jennifer Joy outlasted UCSD's Ina Dan by scores of 3-6, 6-4 and 14-12 in the third set super tiebreaker.
The Tritons will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Cal State Northridge for a 2 p.m. first serve on February 13th. UCSD will then return home to host Fresno Pacific on February 15th and Concordia University (Calif.) on February 20th. Both of those matches are slated to begin at 2 p.m. at the Northview Tennis Courts.
