IRVINE, Calif. ? The No. 16 UC San Diego women's water polo team suffered two defeats Saturday as a participant in the UC Irvine Invitational, a tournament rich with ranked teams.
The Tritons lost 11-3 to No. 2 Stanford Saturday morning. For UCSD, junior Sydney Gstettenbauer, senior Judy Emaus and redshirt freshman Janice Aguilar had one goal apiece while senior goalkeeper Kim Hockett made eight saves.
From there the Tritons moved into the consolation bracket to face off against No. 10 UC Irvine, the host of this weekend's invitational. After the two teams were deadlocked 0-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Anteaters rallied for five goals over the next two quarters and eventually pulled out a 6-2 win. UCSD received goals from Gstettenbauer and sophomore Audra Bloom. Gstettenbauer's two goals Saturday move her season total to 34.
The Tritons, now 4-9 overall, will be back in action Sunday in the second and final day of the invitational. At 11:45 a.m. on Sunday, UCSD will take on the loser of No. 15 Michigan and No. 6 San Diego State.
The Tritons have an all-time record of 8-5 against the Wolverines of Michigan while the Aztecs have taken 30 of the 43 meetings between them and UCSD. Michigan and San Diego State play each other at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday.
