UCSD Scores Four Times In Rout Of Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's soccer team ended the 2008 regular season in smashing fashion Sunday, defeating Cal Poly Pomona 4-0 in a CCAA match-up at Kellogg Field. Senior midfielder Joe Shah had a memorable performance in what will likely be his final game as a Triton, scoring the game-winner and registering an assist against the Broncos.

With the win, UCSD concludes the season at 10-6-2 overall and 6-6-2 in the ultra-competitive California Collegiate Athletic Association. While head coach Jon Pascale's squad did not qualify for next week's CCAA Championship Tournament, the Tritons still have faint hopes for an at large bid in the NCAA Division II Tournament. UCSD entered the final week of play ranked sixth in the West Region. The NCAA field will be announced Monday, November 10.

With the loss, Cal Poly Pomona finishes the season 4-11-3 overall and 2-10-2 in the CCAA.

Shah scored the first of three UCSD first half goals in the 11th minute, heading in a cross from sophomore defender Josh Jackson to put the Tritons in front for good. The goal was Shah's first of the season.

UCSD struck again at the 17:37 mark when Shah found Brandon Yee in the box, where the sophomore defender took two dribbles and beat Bronco goalkeeper Ben Sussman for his second score of 2008 and the 2-0 advantage.

Tony Choi successfully converted a penalty kick in the 41st minute to cap off an impressive opening half for the Tritons.

Senior forward Tony Fernandez made it four consecutive matches with a goal when he scored on a header at the 83:49 mark to put the finishing touches on the UCSD victory. Fellow senior Ali Shams was credited with an assist on the play.

Fernandez leads the team with seven goals, five of which have come in the last four games.

In addition to their offensive exploits, the Tritons were outstanding defensively, limiting the Broncos to just three shots on goals and seven total for the match. UCSD scored its four goals on six shots.

Senior goalkeeper Peter Akman recorded his conference-leading ninth shutout of the season, making three saves to aid the Triton victory.
