Schmidt's 20 Kills Paces No. 12 Tritons Over Cal State Stanislaus

TURLOCK, Calif.  ? The 12th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team got out to a fast start and held off a pesky Cal State Stanislaus squad in a 25-17, 25-21, 21-25, 27-25 victory on Saturday night at Warrior Gym.  After cruising through the first two sets, the Warriors won set three and had set point in the fourth before Sylvia Schmidt continued her hot hitting and sent down her 20th kill of the night to help the Tritons earn the road victory.  With the win, UCSD improves to 12-3, 6-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Warriors drop to 4-14, 1-7 CCAA.

Schmidt finished the night with 20 kills on .457 hitting, while Rebecca Bailey and Hillary Williamson added 11 kills apiece.  Elaine Chen recorded 47 assists while Williamson also had a team-high 10 digs.  Bailey's 11 kills brings her career total to 1,172, just 10 short of the 1,182 kills by Stacy Dunsmore, the UCSD school record.

In the first game, UCSD would outhit CSUS .345-.043.  Williamson recorded six kills in seven swings, good for a .857 hitting percentage.  Condon would tally three kills and two aces, helping the Tritons close the set.  UCSD used two, 5-0 runs early to take a 13-7 advantage.  UCSD never let CSUS within five points the rest of the way, taking the set 25-17.

Chen averaged 14.5 assists per set through the first two sets.  Williamson recored the first three Triton kills in the second set and had eight kills in her first nine attempts without an error.  Bailey and Schmidt recorded eight of UCSD's final nine kills in the set to lead the squad.  CSUS led 12-11 and was within 22-20, but back-to-back Schmidt kills put the set out of reach and Bailey put down the final kill for the 25-21 win.

The Tritons dropped the third set 25-21.  UCSD trailed by small margins at several points including 11-7 and 15-13.  UCSD rallied to tie the set several times but could never put the Warriors away.  With the score tied at 21-21, CSUS got the final four points of the set to force the fourth set with the win.

In the fourth set, the Tritons did not trail until CSUS took the lead at 7-6.  With UCSD leading 12-11 after kills by Schmidt and Kimberly Carpenter, CSUS went on a 4-0 run to take a 15-12 lead, forcing the Tritons to call their final timeout of the set.  UCSD scored the first three points out of the timeout, including a Schmidt kill and Michelle Torres ace to tie the set at 15-15.  CSUS would pull to a 22-18 lead and looked to be set to force a fifth set.  Carpenter and Schmidt recorded kills to pull UCSD within 22-20 and CSUS called timeout.  Schmidt sent down to more kills to tie the set at 22-22.  CSUS again jumped in front 24-22 before the Tritons tied it again at 24-24 and 25-25.  Schmidt sent down a kill to force match point and a CSUS error ended the set and match, 27-25.

UCSD is back in action next week on Friday, when it hosts Sonoma State at 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
