ANN ARBOR, Mich. ? The 14th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team dropped two games on the final day of the Michigan Kickoff Tournament on Sunday in Ann Arbor. The Tritons nearly pulled off a comeback against No. 18 Michigan, outscoring Michigan 3-1 in the final period, but losing 6-5. Nicole Hermann scored twice for UCSD. The Tritons went up against No. 11 Arizona State in their final game and it was the Sun Devils coming out on top by a 6-4 score. Sydney Gstettenbauer scored three times while Janice Aguilar added a score. The Tritons return home on Thursday, February 7 when it hosts No. 10 Hartwick at 7:00 p.m. at Canyonview Pool.
Michigan took a 3-2 lead after the first quarter and after a scoreless second quarter, Michigan scored the only two goals of the third period to lead 5-2. UCSD came back to score three times in the fourth but it was not enough. Hermann scored twice while Judy Emaus, Gstettenbauer and Audra Bloom scored.
The Tritons and Sun Devils tied with two goals apiece in the first quarter, and one goal apiece in both the third and fourth quarters. It was ASU coming through with a 2-0 advantage in the second quarter for the difference.
After the Tritons host Hartwick on February 7, UCSD hosts the 16-team Triton Invitational on Feb. 9-10 on the La Jolla campus.
