UCSD Falls to CCAA Rival, CSU Dominguez Hills, by 3-0 Margin on Wednesday

CARSON, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's soccer team gave up one goal in the first half and two more in the second as Cal State Dominguez Hills posted a 3-0 victory on Wednesday night at Toro Field on the CSUDH campus. With the loss the Tritons fall to 1-4-1 overall and 1-3-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Toros win their seventh straight and improve to 7-1-0 overall and 5-0-0 in league play.

 

Despite taking twice as many shots on goal as their opponents, the Tritons fell behind by a 1-0 score in the first half when CSUDH forward Jose Serpas headed home his fifth goal of the season. Serpas' tally came in the 28th minute off an assist from Scott Mariano.

 

The Toros took control of the match in the second half, out-shooting the Tritons by a 16-4 margin. CSUDH got an insurance goal in the 57th minute when forward Mario Guerrero took a Tiburcio Casillas pass and netted his second goal of the year for the 2-0 advantage. Corey Prost tacked on the team's third goal, netting his first of the season in the 85th minute off Casillas' second assist of the evening.

 

UCSD netminder Peter Akman made five saves while his counterpart, Derby Carillo, made six saves while recording his sixth shutout of the season.

 

Sophomore Tony Choi took three of UCSD's nine shots on the night, two of which resulted in Carillo saves.

 

Head coach Derek Armstrong and his squad will now return home to host two matches this weekend, beginning with Cal State San Marcos on Friday, September 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Triton Soccer Field. The Tritons will then host Cal State L.A. on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
