TURLOCK, Calif. ? The 16th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team defeated Cal State Stanislaus 30-12, 30-28, 30-28 on Saturday night in Turlock. The Tritons hit at a blistering .474 clip in the first game, to go along with three aces apiece by Sylvia Schmidt and Natalie Facchini. Despite the Warriors scoring nine of the last 11 points in game two and six of the last eight in game three, UCSD put down the final points in each game for the sweep. Casey Wilson had 11 kills and nine digs for UCSD, while Schmidt and Rebecca Bailey had eight kills apiece. With the win, UCSD improves to 8-4, 2-2 CCAA, while the Warriors drop to 3-10, 0-4 CCAA.
UCSD led 8-6 in the first game and went on an 8-0 run on Schmidt serves. The lead would reach 18 points and Kimberly Carpenter put down the game ending kill at 30-12. UCSD had 10 kills against one error while CSUS had eight kills and 11 errors in the game.
The Tritons took a 17-9 lead in the second game after the second ace of the game by Michelle Torres. UCSD built the lead to 10 points at 24-14 and looked to be headed to the easy win. A kill by Kim Adams and a block by Kaitlin Potter and Wilson put UCSD up 28-19. CSUS scored the next five points to pull within 28-24. After a UCSD sideout gave the Tritons game point at 29-25, CSUS scored three more points to come within 29-28. The Tritons went to Wilson who put down a kill, as UCSD escaped 30-28.
Game three featured 13 ties and each time UCSD appeared poised to distance themselves, CSUS came up with a point. UCSD led 16-14 after a Wilson solo block and ace. CSUS scored the next point and would take a lead at 21-20. Tied at 22-22, the Tritons went on a scoring run, capped by two Schmidt kills to lead 28-22. Similar to the second game, CSUS rallied, this time tying the game at 28-28. UCSD looked to Bailey and Amber Ries for the last two kills to close out the sweep at 30-28.
UCSD is back in action next week when it hosts No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, Sept. 21. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. on the La Jolla campus.
