LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego and CSU Monterey Bay men's soccer teams played to a 0-0 double overtime draw on Friday night at Triton Soccer Field on the UCSD campus. With the tie the Tritons' record goes to 1-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Otters' record goes to 1-0-2 overall and 1-0-2 in league action.
CSUMB dominated the play in the first half, out-shooting the Tritons by a 4-1 margin while also holding a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Of the four Otter shots in the first stanza, however, none were on goal, keeping UCSD alive and in the match heading into the second period.
Head coach Derek Armstrong's squad picked up the pace in the second half, out-shooting the Otters by an 8-5 margin, including two on goal.
After neither team found the back of the net in regulation play, both squads geared up for their second overtime matches of the year. The Tritons got a golden chance early in the first extra period as Joe Shah had a crossing pass land at his feet that he took and fired on goal. The shot was blocked, however, and bounded directly to newcomer Jason Le. The Vanderbilt transfer's first shot in a Triton uniform was also blocked by the Otters' defense, preventing the golden goal.
CSUMB took two shots in the first overtime period, both of which were saved by UCSD netminder Peter Akman who had four total saves on the night.
Brenden Baca, the CSUMB goalkeeper, made three saves on the night, all of which came in the 90 minutes of regulation play.
UCSD returns to action on Sunday, hosting San Francisco State. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. at Triton Soccer Field.
